KENNEDY RESIDENCE
HALL, BELMONT UNIVERSITY, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
Kennedy Hall is a dormitory housing 250 students on the campus
of Belmont University in Nashville. Due to a enrollment growth,
the university commissioned the project in August of 2002
with the stipulation that it be ready for occupation in August
of 2003. The site was a steeply sloped parcel adjacent to
an existing multi-story dorm, which the client required connection
to on multiple floors. The design solution was a 3 to 5 story
building in a shallow U shape about 280 ft. long. Masonry
was the default exterior material in order to fit in with
the rest of the buildings on campus. The architects devised
a palette of pop-outs, setbacks, bonding patterns and colors
to break down the scale of such a long structure. Pop-outs
occurring along the façade break down the overall length,
as do gabled roof forms that signal entry at the midpoint
and serve as the building's bookends. Awards |
