HISTORIC FEDERAL COURTHOUSE RENOVATION, NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA
The existing 1935-era US Customs House/Courthouse/Post Office building was purchased from the USPS by GSA after the Post Office moved out. Our project began with a Feasibility Study that needed to be performed in 7-1/2 weeks in order to get in the funding cycle for construction in FY 2009. This would allow featuring this historic building during New Bern's 300th anniversary celebration in 2010. Following the feasibility study, our firm was selected to renovate the Judges' Chambers, upgrade the lobby and add a much needed fire stair along with other minor renovation items. Sensitivity to the historic materials and the prominence of this structure within the downtown New Bern community were critical design considerations during this project.
