UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
OF NASHVILLE LIBRARY ADDITION, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE The University School of Nashville, an independent K-12 school of 1000 students, is located on a tight urban site adjacent to Vanderbilt University. The school's library was constructed with its original building in 1924 and had been outgrown decades ago. However, the only space for a new library was a 70-foot strip of land between the existing building and the sidewalk. EOA developed a tall, thin library design that both fits in with the original McKim, Mead & White-designed school building and makes clear that it is a project designed in and for the 21st century. White roofs, geothermal heating and cooling, the reuse (for cabinetry) of wood from the four trees that had to be removed for the project, and effective daylighting of over 80% of the spaces are among the many high-quality design elements yielding a building that will be enjoyable and easy to maintain for more than twice the life of a typical new American building.
